Jersey Knit Clothing for Women: What It Is and Why It Belongs in Your Closet
Jersey knit is the fabric behind almost every piece you reach for twice a week. Here is what it actually is, how it fits, and how to shop for it without guessing.
Jersey Knit at a Glance
- What is jersey knit fabric?
- Jersey is a knit, not a woven. The yarn is looped instead of crossed, which is why it stretches, drapes, and never feels stiff.
- Does jersey stretch out?
- Good jersey recovers. A blend with four to eight percent spandex snaps back after wearing. Pure cotton jersey relaxes through the day and goes back after a wash.
- How should jersey fit?
- Close but not clingy. Jersey moves with you, so you rarely need to size up. If you are between sizes, take the smaller one in jersey and the larger one in a woven.
What Jersey Knit Actually Is
Walk into any boutique and pick up five pieces. Four of them are probably jersey, and almost nobody explains what that means.
Jersey is a knit. That is the whole answer. Woven fabric crosses threads like a basket, which is why a cotton shirt holds a crease. Knit loops one yarn through itself, so jersey stretches every direction and falls soft instead of standing away from the body.
The name comes from the island of Jersey, where fishermen wore knitted pullovers that moved with them in a boat. Coco Chanel started cutting women's clothing from the same machine-knit fabric in the 1910s, back when it was considered underwear material. That is why your favorite t-shirt dress exists.
Soft, stretches when you tug it, rolls instead of creasing. That is jersey.
Most jersey today is cotton, rayon, modal, bamboo, or a poly blend with a little spandex for recovery. The fiber changes the feel. The knit is what makes it jersey.
How to Tell Jersey From Everything Else
You do not need a tag. Three quick checks work in person and they work on a product photo too.
- Pull it sideways. Jersey gives and then comes back. A woven barely moves unless it is cut on the bias.
- Look at the edge. Cut jersey curls toward the right side. That is why so many jersey tops have a raw rolled hem instead of a stitched one.
- Flip it over. Single jersey has a smooth face with tiny vertical columns and a bumpy back with rows of little loops. Two different sides means jersey.
On a website, the giveaway is drape. Jersey pools and curves around the body. A woven linen holds its own shape and shows crisp folds.
| Type | How it feels | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single jersey | Lightest. Classic t-shirt weight. | Tees, tanks, summer dresses, rompers |
| Rayon or modal jersey | Cool, slinky, high shine, falls straight down | Drapey dresses, wide leg jumpsuits, travel pieces |
| Ribbed jersey | Vertical ridges, hugs the body | Tanks, bodysuits, bralettes, fitted dresses |
| Brushed jersey | Soft fuzzy inside, more structure | Fall tops, sweatshirt dresses, joggers |
| Double knit | Thicker, same both sides, holds shape | Structured jumpsuits, ponte pants |
Why Jersey Is the Easiest Fabric to Get Dressed In
There is a reason jersey dominates boutique racks and it is not just cost.
- It forgives. Jersey skims instead of gripping. It does not pull at a waistband or gap at a button, because there usually is no button.
- It fits a wider range of bodies in the same size. A size large jersey dress works on more people than a size large woven dress. That is why jersey carries so much of our Curvy Cove Collection.
- It packs flat and shakes out. Roll it, stuff it in a weekender, ten minutes in a steamy bathroom. Done. No ironing, no dry cleaning.
- It works year round. Same dress, sandals in July, tall boots in November.
The trade is that jersey shows what is underneath. Seamless underwear and a smooth bra solve that in one step, which is why ribbed seamless bralettes sell so well for us.
What to Buy First If You Are Building a Jersey Wardrobe
Start with four pieces. They cover most of a week between them.
A jersey jumpsuit
One piece, no decisions. The single highest return item in this fabric.
A casual jersey dress
Sandals now, boots and a jacket in October. Works both ways.
A jersey romper
Summer's easiest answer, especially with real pockets.
Two or three jersey tops
One tank, one short sleeve, one with a little shape to it.
How to Wash Jersey So It Lasts Three Years Instead of One
Almost all jersey damage comes from heat. Not detergent, not wearing it. Heat.
- Wash cold and inside out. Cold water keeps color and keeps the knit from relaxing.
- Skip the fabric softener. It coats the fibers, and on cotton jersey it causes that grey dingy look after a month.
- Hang to dry or tumble on low and pull it out damp. A hot dryer is what shrinks jersey and what kills the spandex that gives it recovery.
- Fold knits, do not hang them. A hanger stretches the shoulders over time.
- Pills are normal, not a defect. A sweater shaver takes them off in two minutes.
One hot dryer cycle undoes more than fifty cold washes. Change that habit first.
Jersey Knit Questions We Get Asked Most
What is jersey knit fabric made of?
Jersey describes the knit, not the fiber. It can be cotton, rayon, modal, bamboo, or polyester. Most boutique jersey is cotton or rayon with four to eight percent spandex so it holds shape.
Is jersey fabric good quality?
Good jersey lasts for years. Judge it by weight and recovery, not price. Hold it to the light. If you see through it and it stays stretched after a pull, it is thin. Opaque and springs back is good.
Does jersey knit shrink?
Cotton jersey can shrink up to five percent in a hot wash or dryer. Rayon and poly barely shrink. Wash cold, dry low, and you will not notice a change.
Is jersey the same as cotton?
No. Cotton is a fiber and jersey is a knit. You can have cotton jersey, cotton poplin, or cotton denim, and all three feel completely different. You can also have jersey with no cotton in it at all.
Why do jersey clothes roll up at the hem?
That curl is built into the knit and it is normal. Designers either use it on purpose as a raw rolled hem, or stop it with a twin-needle stitch or a band. A rolling hem is not a flaw.
